How often are meetings held? Are they always on the same day of the week? During the summer? A: Meetings are held once a month on a weekday evening decided a month in advance by the committee. Lately, the committee has opted to meet on the third Tuesday of the month. The committee meets twice in the summer, one meeting for June/July, and a second in August before school resumes. 2. How long is a typical meeting? Where are they held? What are they like? A: Meetings last an hour. Meetings are held at members' homes on a voluntary, rotating basis. All meetings have an agenda, distributed to members several days in advance. They are informal and occasionally entertaining. 3. What are the benefits of being on the Commitee? A: Committee members have the advantage of influencing the direction of the Preschool. Members gain a strong sense of community, of being aware of what is going on at the school. It is also a night out with other interesting grown-ups, and there are tasty snacks. 4. I've never been on a Committee and don't have a lot of experience...is that okay? A: Of course! No special expertise is needed, just a willingness to be involved. 5. I'm not Jewish and/or a Temple member-- does that matter? A: Anyone who has children at the Preschool is welcome to join the committee. According to the Oak Park Temple by-laws, only Temple Members are allowed to vote. However, the input of all members of the committee, whether or not they are Jewish or members of the Temple, is actively sought and all members are encouraged to voice their opinions. 6. I work full-time. Do I have time to be on the committee? A: Sure you do. Meetings are always held on weekday evenings. And there are plenty of opportunities to volunteer on evenings or weekends. 7. I'm expecting a baby soon and couldn't commit to attending meetings right after the baby arrives. Is that okay? A: Of course! 8. Can I bring my children and/or nursing baby to the meetings? A: Nursing babies are welcome. Please leave older children at home. 9. Is there a financial commitment to being on the committee? A: There are occasional requests for donations to support Preschool activities, but these are minor (less than $10) and not obligatory. i.e. bringing food or cups to parent party. 10. I'd be interested in attending committee meetings, but I don't have a lot of time beyond that to volunteer for stuff. Can I still be a committee member? A: Committee members are expected, ideally, to attend as many preschool events as they can so there is a visible presence of committee members. These events include things like Tot Shabbat, holiday parties, Family Fun Fridays and events scheduled for days when school is not in sessions. We would hope you would be attending many of these events with your child in order to enrich his or her experience at the Preschool. 11. Do I have to host any of the committee meetings? A: If you can, great. If you can't, that's okay. 12. Does being a member of the committee fulfill my volunteer commitment for the Preschool? A: Being a member of the committee counts as one of your two required volunteer commitments. |
