Tu B’Shvat
Tu B’shevat is Jewish Arbor Day. It is also called the New Year of the Trees. The holiday is observed on the fifteenth day of the Hebrew Month of Shevat (which this year falls on January 25th.) Tu B’shevat was originally an agricultural festival marking the emergence of spring in ancient Palestine. At that time, the tithes on the fruit crop were levied and sent to the Temple in Jerusalem. After the destruction of the Second Temple, Jews used this time each year to eat a variety of fruits and nuts that could be obtained from Palestine. The sixteenth and seventeenth century Kabalists (mystics) of Palestine elaborated on this custom and created a ritual for Tu B’shevat similar to the Passover Sedar. Today in modern Israel, Tu B’shevat has become a national holiday. It is a tree planting festival for both Israelis and Jews throughout the world.
Kabballat Shabbat
On Friday, January 25th, join Oak Park Temple for a special Tu B’shvat “nosh” at 6 PM in the Rotunda followed by a Kabbalat Shabbat Service at 6:30 PM and you’ll be home in time for the kids to go to bed at 7:30 PM. The Oak Park Temple joins together in the rotunda at 6 PM for social time prior to our 6:30 PM service. At 6:30 PM, we welcome Shabbat with a musical service featuring classically trained guitarist Aaron Burnstein. The time of the service allows those with small children to join us following an early dinner at home, and those who have more scheduling flexibility to have a leisurely dinner with family or friends following the service. Join Oak Park Temple in celebrating Shabbat with reflection and joyful communal singing!
